Promoting local shops

We welcome the publication of the first comprehensive report into what action needs to be taken to preserve the future of small shops both in the Royal Borough and further afield.

The independent Retail Commission was set up by Kensington and Chelsea Council as a result of increasing concern at seeing small shops disappear only to be replaced by faceless multiples or coffee shops.

The report calls on the Government to make major changes to planning, parking and other regulations in an attempt to save the character of specialist shopping areas and high streets.

It makes 54 recommendations designed to make sure that small shops have the chance to survive and flourish.
