Lead in the Royal Borough

Monitoring

Lead is monitored using sampling equipment which collects particles on a filter. These filters are collected weekly/monthly and then analysed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Lead is currently monitored by DEFRA at their monitoring site on the Cromwell Road. The Ladbroke Grove monitoring site ceased operation at the end of 2001.

Long term trends

The results of monitoring in the borough since 1983 show:

  • there has been a significant downward decline of levels;
  • the levels at Cromwell Road and Ladbroke Grove are already below objective levels for both 2005 and 2010;
  • whilst in the 1990's monitoring showed levels were higher at the Cromwell Road compared to Ladbroke Grove by 2001 concentrations had reached comparable levels at both sites.
