The cemeteries are owned and managed by the Royal Borough of Kensington Chelsea. The graves and surrounding grounds are maintained by private contractors.

The Cemeteries Division aims to provide a sensitive and a caring service to users of the Royal Borough's two cemeteries at:

This involves the administration and organisation of burial arrangements, attendance at interments and ensuring compliance with the associated legal requirements and Burial Codes of Practice.

A "maintained grave" service is provided by an agreement made with grave owners for seasonal planting and maintenance of graves.

Other functions of the service include the sale of grave spaces for future use, the issue of permits for the erection of monuments and the transfer of grave ownership and grave spaces.

The cemeteries grounds are open to visitors from 9.00am daily. Closing times vary according to the season and are advertised on the entrance noticeboards.

Address:

Description:

This cemetery was established in 1929 and is situated adjacent to Gunnersbury Park. The site occupies approximately 8.9 hectares of land.

The main office covering both cemeteries is located at Gunnersbury Cemetery. There are toilet facilities and car parking spaces for 45 cars. The cemetery also contains a chapel which has an induction loop fitted, an electric piano organ as well as a selection of suitable CD music for services.

A recently established Garden of Remembrance affords the interment of cremated remains. A Book of Remembrance for memorial inscriptions is also available and the Royal Borough offers a free inscription with the first interment. Other more elaborate commemorative inscriptions may be purchased via the cemetery office.

The cemetery entrance drive is lined with displays of colourful flower tubs and floral bedding arrangements, including flowering shrubs such as camellias and roses along the side walls.

Description:

A fourteenth century style gothic archway leads into the cemetery. Founded in 1855 it extends to approximately 7.7 hectares and is typically Victorian in style.

The cemetery grounds are generously planted with coniferous and deciduous trees, including holly and yew, which also line the entrance drive.

Exhumations

From time to time people from abroad make requests for the remains of friends or family buried in Britain to be exhumed and taken back to their native home. In order to protect the health of the grave workers and surrounding population, the Council's Environmental Health service must be notified of such cases and our agreement sought on the health precautions to be taken. With two famous burial grounds in the Royal Borough, Kensal Green and Brompton, there are two or three such requests a year.
