National Non-Domestic Rates (NNDR), also known as Uniform Business Rate, is the Government's tax on business properties.

Local Authorities collect Business Rates on behalf of the Government, and the Government then redistributes the total amount collectable, as part of the Annual Formula Grant settlement.

For 2008/2009, businesses in Kensington and Chelsea are expected to pay £208.1 million in Business Rates, of which the Royal Borough will receive £90 million. The gross annual bill is calculated by multiplying the rateable value of the property by the appropriate rate multiplier, which is set annually by the Government.

For 2008/09 there are two multipliers, one for certain businesses that qualify for Small Business Rate Relief, that is 45.8 pence, and one for businesses that do not qualify for Small Business Rate Relief that is 46.2 pence. The net annual bill may differ if the property is subject to transitional relief (see details under Transitional Arrangements.)

As at 1 April 2008 there were 7,980 business rate properties in the Royal Borough, with a total rateable value of £501 million.
