Little Wormwood Scrubs is a park in north Kensington. It lies within the boundaries of Hammersmith and Fulham, but is mainly used by residents of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

The Royal Borough took over the management of Little Wormwood Scrubs in May 2008. We are planning to make improvements to the park to make sure it is a safe and enjoyable place for the whole community.

During May and June 2008 local residents were asked what they thought the park should be like in future. These are some of the things they said:

  • the wildness of the park makes it a special place, and the wildlife and peace and quiet should be protected - however the wilder areas can feel unsafe and some people don’t go round there
  • the paths and the grass are uneven, full of holes and not safe to walk or run on
  • there is a big problem with dog mess; it puts people off going to the park or going on the grass
  • it is not very family-friendly; the play equipment is only suitable for very young children, and needs mending and cleaning
  • there is nothing for older children and young people to do in the park
  • there are no toilets
  • some people don’t feel safe going to the park because they feel intimidated by people in the park in the evenings and by park-users with aggressive dogs
  • the park needs better care in lots of ways – there are fences and walls that need mending or replacing, weeds and graffiti that should be removed, and the grass should be cut more often
  • there are not enough benches or bins

These are just some of the things people said about the park. You can read the full report of the findings here:

Improvements to the park

Plans include a new and extended adventure playground next summer. This will provide exciting play equipment for children aged 5-18.  It will be open for longer hours and will be staffed by qualified play workers who will run sessions for different age groups and children with disabilities. The Play Service will be involving children and families in the design of the playground over the next few months.

As part of the Council’s commitment to look after the park, we will:

  • have regular parks police patrols in the park
  • repair broken fencing, improve entrances, and mend the broken play equipment
  • have two park attendants on duty every day
  • fill holes in the grass areas so that they are smoother and safer
  • cut the grass regularly
  • have stronger enforcement on dog mess and dog behaviour, and more bins and signs
  • empty the dog toilets at least once a day (more often if necessary)
  • work with the Friends of Little Wormwood Scrubs to look after the park
