North Kensington is a unique area within the borough, with a diverse, multicultural population. Located here are the well known shopping areas of Portobello Road and Notting Hill Gate and it is also home to the internationally renowned Notting Hill Carnival.
The area contains both areas of conservation and a number of social housing estates, particularly in the northernmost parts of the borough and the currently vacant Kensal Green Gas Works next to Sainsbury’s at Ladbroke Grove.
The North Kensington area also has pockets of deprivation which are characterised by higher levels of unemployment, crime and poor health. The main purpose of this plan is to assist regeneration in this part of the borough. We are considering several themes: transport; the Westway; education; housing-estate renewal; and employment. When we bring these together, we think that there are three broad areas that need to be subject to action - Kensal, Latimer and Portobello.
We are keen to get your views on the themes, the areas and the degree of change that you would consider to be appropriate. This is the first stage of consultation on this document.
During February and March 2008 we want to get your views as to what the specific issues and options are for the future of North Kensington in relation to the above themes. It is essential that everyone has an opportunity to be involved in the preparation of the Action Plan.
What do you think the future of North Kensington should look like?
The consultation period has been extended to Monday 7 April 2008.
