Children’s Disability Team

The Children’s Disability Team offers services to families with children under 18 who have a disability or long-term illness. The team provides information, advice, support and practical help to families to help them cope with difficulties that can arise. This includes access to play and respite care in and out of the home.

A specialist Occupational Therapist works with families with a disabled child and can give advice on:

  • Managing the difficulties caused by a physical disability for both the child and his/her family
  • Equipment to help with daily living and personal care
  • Minor home adaptations, such as grab rails or stair rails
  • Major structural adaptations such as ramps and bathroom alterations

For contact details see Social Services.

Respite (temporary) care

The Little House provides short breaks in a comfortable environment for children who have a disability, providing their families with respite from caring for them. It has seven beds, is wheelchair accessible and equipped for children with physical disabilities.

Please note: There is 24 hour care from a team of experienced staff.

For contact details see Little House

The transition to adult services

Children with disabilities will become adults with disabilities. Most services are organised either for children, which usually means up to the age of 18, or for adults. The Social Services’ Disability Teams play a key role in helping disabled young adults make the transition to adult services smoothly. A specialist social worker in the team is responsible for work with young adults.
