Families, children and young people

In this section, you can find information about the following:

Introduction

There are lots of services for children, young people and families in the Royal Borough.

Bringing up children is not always easy but there are places where you can find advice, help and people to talk too.

Social workers can help parents in lots of ways. Working with you, they will assess your needs and those of your children and what services could help. If the services are available, they will then put parents and children in touch with them. They can also provide direct help to you in the form of advice, practical assistance, guidance and counselling.

Our aim is to help parents, whenever possible, to bring up their children in their own homes. We believe it is important to work alongside parents rather than take over from them.

Social workers

Social workers provide help and support for parents and children in their homes. They are responsible for making an assessment and working out what help should be given to children, young people and families. They will work with the family to help them cope with family difficulties and also make the arrangements for the services. Social workers can offer advice, support and practical help at times when things may be difficult. They may also help the family get other services such as mental health services, counselling, and help with drug and alcohol problems.

Who do I contact if I need help?

You can telephone or visit your local Social Services office.

If you cannot visit one of our offices because of your personal circumstances, we can arrange to see you at home or somewhere else which is more convenient for you. Our staff will always carry identification with them.

If your first language is not English, or if you need help to communicate because you have a sight, hearing or other disability, we will arrange for an interpreter or any other help you need to help you talk to us.
