Working with young people

Schools Involvement Team

The Schools Involvement Team visits schools across the Borough and talk to young people and staff about community safety issues. The team works with young people from their first year at primary school through to college. These include stranger danger, drugs legislation and stop and search. The team also take part in sessions with community groups outside the school environment.

In the Autumn term, the Safely Home competition is held. The competition is open to Year 5 pupils in schools across the Borough and about 75 percent of schools take part each year.

Teams of children play the board game in which they must travel home safely and deal with challenges on the way. These range from being offered cigarettes to seeing a bully. The Final is held annually at the Town Hall.

In December 2006, the competition was won by Oxford Gardens School.

Junior Citizen is held in the Spring and is a partnership event for young people in Year 6. Through the interactive workstations, they learn a range of safety messages including noise nuisance, travel on public transport and stranger danger.

Other Work with Young People

In June 2006, young people completed an environmental visual audit, looking at community safety issues around Ladbroke Grove.

Their findings were presented by a young person to senior council staff, senior local police officers and members of the community. The Community Safety Programme Board have acted upon your findings and the council have taken steps to address some of the issues they raised.
