Nannies and home childcarers

Nannies and other home-based childcarers are employed by you to provide care for children in your own home. They will fit in with unusual working hours, and work part-time or even live-in. Some may agree to do additional jobs around the house. Parents can also share a nanny with another family.

Most nannies and some other home-based childcarers have a recognised childcare qualification or nursery nurse training, but this isn’t compulsory. Wages for nannies and home childcarers range widely depending on hours, experience, where you live and whether they live-in.

Costs could include holiday and sick pay, mobile phone for emergencies and putting them on your car insurance if you want them to drive the family car.

You can find a nanny by using a specialist agency (which will likely charge you a fee) or by advertising yourself. Nanny agencies will often be listed in the local telephone book and on the internet.

Places where you might advertise include specialist magazines such as Nursery World, local papers or noticeboards in libraries, primary schools and parent toddler group drop-ins.

Further information about finding a nanny can be found at DirectGov. You can also take a look at our list of nanny agencies.

If you are a nanny and you are registered on the OFSTED voluntary register and you would like to advertise through the Family Information Service, please e-mail fis@rbkc.gov.uk or call 0207 361 4319 for more details.
