Young people
Youth work supports young people through the transition from
adolescence to adulthood. It offers young people aged 14 to 25 the
opportunity to learn more about themselves, and to realise their
potential, through a wide variety of activities which combine
enjoyment and personal challenge. Youth workers have a strong
commitment to young people as partners in developing and shaping
the service, and offer many opportunities for responsibility and
decision-making. Young people are actively involved in designing
club activities and in supporting one another through peer
education programmes.
All youth centres offer regular evening programmes of
activities, with some also providing weekend and holiday projects.
Activities cater for all interests and abilities, and include
special provision for young people with learning difficulties and
disabilities. Programmes typically allow young people to explore
issues such as citizenship, health and personal relationships, the
environment, sport, music and the arts.
Youth projects provide specialist services and activities for
young people. These include sports and performing arts projects,
information, advice and guidance services, and training
opportunities. Youth projects operate in a wide variety of informal
settings, including youth centres, community venues, estates and
outreach work.
The community education service supports many voluntary youth
organisations within the Royal Borough by providing staffing and
other financial support. It also supports a varied community arts
programme for young people which includes theatre, singing, dance,
photography and video production.
