The Council’s climate change programme
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for the Council.
In January 2007 the Council demonstrated its commitment to
delivering a programme of measures and initiatives for tackling
climate change by becoming a signatory to the Nottingham
Declaration on Climate Change. We adopted the Climate
Change Strategy in 2008 and set up Climate Change Programme to
tackle climate change. The Council continues to work
with residents, businesses and other partners to reduce the
impact of climate change.
Carbon Management
One of the Climate Change Programme's priorities is to stretch
the Council as far as it can to reduce CO2 and save money - this
means generating new ideas, evaluating them and implementing them.
The Council joined the Carbon Trust's Local Authority Carbon
Management Programme in 2008 and set a target to reduce our
carbon emissions by 40 per cent by March 2014 from the 2007/08
baseline level, and being carbon neutral by 2020.
Staff Travel Plan
The Staff Travel Plan sets out a package of
measures to address the Council’s transport use and to promote
sustainable forms of travel. The Staff Travel Plan also complements
a number of the Royal Borough’s existing policies and
programmes.
Since the implementation of the plan,
the Council installed new secure cycle parking facilities in two of
its main sites, a cycle hire docking station at the Town Hall,
improved shower facilities, offered free cycle maintenance sessions
to all staff and free cycle maintenance courses to all staff. To

Greenhouse gas emissions from the Council’s own
estate and operations
On 13 April 2011, the Government requested all
Local Authorities in England to measure and report our greenhouse
gas emissions from our own estate and operations as a successor
indicator to National Indicator 185. The Council assessed its
greenhouse gas emissions for the last two years by monitoring
our energy and resource usage at the Council offices, estates and
schools. This assessment also includes seven key contractors who
deliver crucial services to our community.
Please note that the requirements,
scope and methodology have changed from the previous NI185 and
therefore the data are not necessarily comparable. Previous NI185
was measuring only carbon emissions from our estate and operations
using slightly different methodology/scoping. If you would like to
know more details of these different indicators or to see NI185
2008/09 results, please visit the DECC
website.
