'Too Big for the Bin' collection service
Who can use this service?
Collections can only take place from residential property within
the Royal Borough and exclude commercial customers or businesses;
including property managing agents, commercial and private
landlords (for collections of this nature please use commercial waste
services). Please carefully read the following information
before accessing the booking form at the foot of this page.
We will not collect:
How many items and what does it cost?
There is a call-out charge of £26.70 payable when you book a
collection - this covers the collection of up to ten items.
You will need to advise exactly what items are included at the
time of booking (there is space on the form to describe them).
The service is free if you are in receipt of housing and/or
council tax benefit. We will require your National Insurance number
for verification during the booking process.
Collection times
We carry out collections between 7am-3pm Monday to
Saturday. If you need to provide access to the property or the
items you can request a 7am-12pm collection.
This is subject to availability and can not be guaranteed.
What items qualify for collection?
The following are examples of what would be 'too big for the
bin': TV, large stereo, floor lamps, computer monitor, washing
machine, sofa, table, cabinet, chair, bedbase, mattress.
There are some exclusions though: DIY waste; garden waste, car
parts, hazardous waste (such as car batteries, asbestos, paint or
florescent tubes), builders’ waste or any waste generated as a
result of work undertaken by tradesmen. Please see the Domestic waste homepage
for more advice on these.
What happens when a collection is arranged?
You will need to leave your items at ground or basement level.
Items must not be placed on the pavement, and kept within confines
of property.
Bundle your item(s); for example if you dismantle your wardrobe
and bundle into one lot, this bundle will count as 1 item.
Keep mattresses and carpets dry as they become very heavy when
wet.
If you are elderly, disabled or there are other special
circumstances which prevent you from moving the items yourself to
the collection point please contact streetline@rbkc.gov.uk,
phone 020 7361 3001 before proceeding.
Heavy items
If the item is extremely heavy or bulky, please request a 3 man
crew. This service is only available on the last Wednesday of the
month. Examples of very heavy or bulky items include American
fridge/freezers, sofa-beds or a piano.
If you dismantle a sofa bed and remove the metal action, this
will count as two items, and a three man crew will not be
required.
Cancellations
If you wish to cancel this appointment you
must let us know by 12 noon the last working day before the
collection is due to take place. If you do not let us know in time
and payment has already been received no refund can
be given.
Recycling
London Re-use Network collects and sells
unwanted household items, giving them new homes in the capital.
Residents and households in Kensington and Chelsea can donate
unwanted furniture, appliances and household items by calling 020
3142 8506 or booking here.
Please note: There will be a small collection
charge which is the same as the Council’s bulky waste and furniture
collection service.
Rework is a
new reuse workshop now open which will see hundreds of repairable
items fixed up and sold on. Please contact the reuse hotline and get your old
sofa or washing machine collected from your home and delivered
either to the workshop for repair, or to a storage depot for
resale.
Please note: There will be a fee for the
service, but it will be no more than booking a bulky waste
collection from the Council.
The workshop will accept the following items in good condition
or in a repairable state:
- Home furniture (e.g. beds, sofas, tables, chairs, cupboards and
drawers)
- Large appliances (e.g. fridges, washing machines, tumble driers
and cookers)
- Small electricals - pretty much anything with a plug!
- Textiles (e.g. curtains, carpet, fabric, bed linen and
clothes)
- Bicycles
- Children's equipment (e.g. prams, buggies, cots and
toys)
You can also drop off your items at the
Smugglers Way Reuse and Recycling Centre, where Rework is
based.
Please also consider Freecycle to dispose of your unwanted items.
