What's changing

The partners of the Exhibition Road project have committed to make Exhibition Road the most accessible cultural destination in the world – and with the funding now in place, they are well-positioned to realise their vision. 

The Royal Borough has committed £10 million, with a further £14 million from the Mayor of London and £1 million from Westminster
City Council. 

To improve access for all members of the community, both disabled and able bodied, changes will be made to the street design, pedestrian spaces, traffic flows and parking arrangements.

Award-winning architectural practice Dixon Jones has developed a distinctive single surface design that will transform Exhibition Road into a magnificent pedestrian-friendly place – reflecting its status as London’s cultural heartland.

The single surface is kerb-free with the minimum of street furniture and barriers. By having a less distinct ‘track’ for through traffic than one defined by kerbs, motorists will drive more cautiously, slowly and courteously, and with greater awareness and consideration for pedestrians. It will also provide greater flexibility in the way Exhibition Road can be used and the changing demands that may be placed upon it during the course of a year and over the coming years.

Whether you’re a resident, visitor or member of the thriving business community, Exhibition Road will provide a memorable experience. 

Changes will include:

  • Introducing a kerb-free single surface
  • Removing barriers and street clutter
  • Creating a logical street layout including large pedestrian areas
  • Installing visual and tactile lines to distinguish pedestrian areas
    from those used by vehicles
  • Introducing a 20mph speed limit
  • Installing high quality street lighting
  • Unravelling the South Kensington one-way system
  • Rerouting bus services to improve public transport interchange around South Kensington Station
  • Increasing ‘blue badge’ parking
