Changes to the inside
The internal layout of the building was transformed to overcome the space difficulties. The revised layout, including a complete new top floor with three bedsits, (Glossary Term)
provides 19 units.
The basement floor was converted into a self-contained two-bedroom flat (the rental income from this flat helps to offset the reduction in income from having fewer bedsits to let).
Many properties on either side of the building already had similar extensions so it was possible to get planning permission for this additional floor. A total of 36 residents will occupy the Flagship Home.
The existing basement floor consisted of an uninsulated concrete slab. This was taken up, the floor level lowered and a new floor built incorporating 50mm of expanded polystyrene to provide insulation.
