Bookstart
Bookstart is the national programme that encourages all parents
and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as
possible. The aim is for every child to develop a lifelong love of
books.
Bookstart aims to provide every child aged three and under with
two free packs of books. Each pack contains two books. The first
five years are the best time for learning to talk and most of a
child's language comes from the adults around them.
Enjoying books with babies and toddlers is a wonderful way to
increase language skills and helps children to understand their
world. Bookstart packs are only half of the gift to children and
their families; the other -more lasting gift - is the message of
enjoying books together.
Bookstart Baby bag
The Bookstart Baby bag is given to babies at their eight-twelve
months developmental check by health visitors and is also available
from some children’s centres according to an annual rota.
My Bookstart Treasure Chest
The My Bookstart Treasure Chest is distributed to three year
olds through children’s centres, nurseries, pre-schools and other
Early Years settings, according to an annual rota.
It's never too early to start sharing books with your
child. Many parents are surprised to learn that babies can
benefit from books at such an early age, but research shows that
babies and toddlers who love books begin reading sooner and have a
head start at school. Taking the time every day to sing and or read
to your child will help them to learn to love hearing language and
is a good opportunity for a cuddle!
Most of our Children’s Libraries host Baby Rhymetime sessions to
encourage you to sing to and interact with your baby. The sessions
are very popular and good fun.
Did you know that babies can have their own library card!
Some of our Libraries hold Storytime sessions for pre-schoolers
and Kensington Central Library has a Saturday afternoon Storytime
session!
