Orange Prize for Fiction
The Orange Prize for Fiction, first awarded in 1996, is awarded
to the woman who has written the best, eligible full-length novel
in English. The aim of the prize is not only to celebrate novels of
excellence, originality and accessibility but also to promote women
writers to as wide a range of readers as possible.
The Orange Prize was set up as it was thought the considerable
achievements of women novelists were often passed over by the major
literary prizes.
The prize is run by a management committee, administered by
Booktrust and sponsored by Orange. The annual prize money of
£30,000 is anonymously endowed.
