Bibliotherapy Project ‘Book Slam’ Sessions for Children and
Young People
Book Slam
groups are currently running in schools, hospitals, libraries and
youth clubs across the borough, engaging children and young people
whilst sharing and developing a love of reading and appreciation of
poetry. The groups are a great way to build confidence, improve
communication skills and be engaged in thought provoking
discussions.
The reading material is selected to be appropriate for the
general age group, and aims to be exciting, entertaining and
thought provoking. Generally we read a main piece of text, often a
short story or chapter from a novel, followed by a couple of poems
that draw on some of the main ideas or themes found in the main
text. Group members are encouraged to read out loud or talk about
their feelings towards the texts, however there is absolutely no
pressure to do so. The aim is for all group members to be as
comfortable and relaxed as possible; we provide refreshments and a
welcoming environment.
