Mayor meets charity challenge19 May 2003The Mayor and Mayoress of the Royal Borough, Cllr. Prof. Sir Anthony Coates and Lady Coates, have raised an impressive £47,000 for Cancer Research UK throughout their term. The money is set to fund a vital piece of equipment for research into bladder cancer. The Mayor's year long commitment saw a variety of fundraising events including a challenging 40 mile sponsored bike ride and 'Handel Returns to Kensington' - an evening of music followed by a gala dinner which raised a staggering £37,000 alone. The Mayor, who will finish his term this Wednesday (21 May), said: "I am very grateful to all those who have supported my charity this year. Nearly 250 people attended our Gala Concert and Dinner. Many more sent donations and a great number supported us by taking part in or sponsoring us on our cycle ride to Windsor. Through their hard work, enthusiasm and generosity, they have helped us to raise £47,000 for Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital and my warmest thanks goes to them all". Ann Waisenker, Head of Community Fundraising for Cancer Research UK said: "We are delighted to have had the support of the Mayor and Mayoress of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea this year. They have supported Cancer Research UK in so many ways. We are truly grateful to their kindness and dedication to the cause" Bladder cancer affects over 12,000 people each year.
