Carnival in the Royal Borough21 July 2003For nearly 40 years, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has worked in partnership with the Notting Hill Carnival, playing a key role, ensuring that the Carnival is a successful and safe world-class event. The Royal Borough welcomes the creation of the London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd (LNHC) to provide the event with a democratically elected organising body. This mandate from the community provides the Carnival with a legitimate organisation that has the potential to grow. The Royal Borough looks forward to working with the new body and feels confident in their ability to provide a truly spectacular and colourful Carnival 2003. The five directors of the LNHC are all well respected figures in the Carnival community and have been elected on merit. They are people who the Royal Borough has worked well with in the past and who possess the demonstrable skills and experience necessary for an event of this nature. Carnival now has the resource, talent and commitment that an event of this kind needs. The Royal Borough provides Carnival with a massive array of support services representing an investment approaching £500,000. These range from:
The Royal Borough also works hard to reduce the inconvenience caused to local residents. We provide 90,000 public information leaflets to all residents and ensure that the massive street cleaning operation starts immediately after the celebrations cease. The Leader of the Royal Borough, Councillor Merrick Cockell said, "Carnival has now become an institution that celebrates a major chapter in the history of Britain's Caribbean community. This is a tradition that the Royal Borough is rightly proud of and is part of the bricks and mortar of North Kensington. I hope all those who participate over the two days have an enjoyable and safe time." For further information contact Press and Public Relations.
