City car share club expands in Royal Borough

1 October 2003

Due to the success of the London City Car Club, two additional car locations are to be opened in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on Wednesday 01 October .

Two new cars will be situated in dedicated parking bays in Cambridge Gardens and Lancaster Road in Ladbroke Grove. The Car Club cars will provide a real alternative to owning a vehicle, by giving local residents and businesses 24 hour access to cars, which can be booked out over the phone or through the internet for as little as one hour or up to a few days.

Councillor Mrs. Frances Taylor, Chairman, Public Transport and Road Safety Advisory Group said: "It's very encouraging to see the Car Club expanding in Kensington and Chelsea. Royal Borough residents can really start to take advantage of this convenient and environmentally friendly way to have access to a car."

Councillor Daniel Moylan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning and Transportation added: "The Club is not only a financially attractive alternative to private ownership, but by sharing a vehicle the number of cars on the road will be reduced, helping to cut pollution and congestion."

Anne Russell, a Kensington resident and member of the London City Car Club, said: "The Car Club is an excellent idea, I decided to join as I did not need full-time use of a car in London and it is easier than renting. Parking is also a major problem where I live, but as the Car Club vehicle has a reserved parking space this is no longer an issue for me."

Car Club vehicles are already operating successfully in Kensington (outside the Central Library) and in Ealing, Islington, Merton and Sutton. The scheme is expanding in London with the support of the London City Car Club Consortium, comprising of Kensington and Chelsea and six other London Boroughs. The Club aims to create a comprehensive network across the city.
