La Fille du regiment reviewsWilliam Kerley's production hits an ideal note of comedy pathos and includes
some outstandingly good singing. Really, the feel-good factor is so high it
should register on the Richter scale. Lee has a gloriously rich and flexible
voice…matched by a fine-sounding Botelho. Robert Dean's conducting is a model
of snap crackle and pop. "A fizzing production! Donizetti's gem has to be funny and this one was. "In Hye-Youn Lee, the production is blessed with a singer whose voice is
bright, clean and agile." "Donizetti's La Fille du régiment seems set to become a favourite with
British audiences. Robert Dean's conducting had all the bounce that this
foot-tapping score requires and the two leading roles were taken by promising
young singers. As Marie, Korean soprano Hye-Youn Lee acted with spirit and sang
her regimental rataplans with gusto." Marie Hye-Youn Lee's Marie captured everyone's hearts as well as Luciano
Botelho's Tonio. The soldiers of OHP Chorus were splendid, as was Robert Dean's
conducting of the City of London Sinfonia. Recommended strongly to alfresco
opera fans. We enjoyed it all more than with ROH's starry cast at Covent Garden
last year.
