How to make a planning application

If you are thinking of making alterations to your property, the information on these pages may be of interest. If you would like advice on whether you require planning permission, please see permitted development.

The information on the pre application advice page will explain the best way for you to seek advice from the Council on any proposal you may have.

If you require advice on the application process and the information needed to submit an application, please visit the relevant page:

  • Permitted Development - in certain cases, planning permission is not required for a development as the works can be carried out using 'permitted development rights'. This page explains those rights and advises on receiving clarification from the Council on permitted development.
  • Pre-application advice - this page explains how you can receive advice on a proposal prior to submitting a formal application to the Council. Here you will find advice on the various options, service standards on our formal pre-application service and the costs involved.
  • Planning application process - once you have established that you need to submit an application for the Council's consideration, this page will explain the various processes involved and the relevant timescales.
  • Submitting your application - before you submit your application to the Council please consult the guidance on this page. The guidance explains the correct application form to use, provides links to all of the available application forms, what supporting documents you require and the correct fee payable.
  • Application forms available to download - all the Council's planning application forms are available to download along with guidance notes on how best to complete the forms.
