Wornington Green

The Council accepts that the Wornington Green estate in North Kensington is coming to the end of its useful life and needs to be improved through redevelopment.

We have received a planning application from Kensington Housing Trust (KHT) for the complete redevelopment of the estate.

Key features of KHT’s planning application

  • 538 high quality affordable homes to replace those demolished
  • an additional 30 shared ownership homes
  • more than 300 new homes for sale
  • 10 per cent of dwellings to be wheelchair accessible
  • reinstatement of a traditional street pattern with street facing front doors and entrances
  • approximately 20 new retail units for Portobello Road generating up to 200 new jobs
  • all homes to be more energy efficient
  • homes to be the mix of sizes required to deal with overcrowding

The Council’s planning brief

To ensure that redevelopment delivers real quality of life improvements, the Council, in consultation with local people, developed a planning brief setting out the essential ingredients that Kensington Housing Trust’s application must have in order to get planning permission. This is known as the supplementary planning document. Read more about the Wornington Green Supplementary Planning Document.

If work commences, the Council also requires that:

  • an area of public open space at least half the size of the current Athlone Gardens is available at all times during the construction of Wornington Green
  • any replacement community centre is provided before the existing Venture Centre is demolished
  • the new lock-ups on Munro Mews are provided before the existing lock-ups are demolished

What next

The council is consulting on this application and it is likely to go before the Council’s Major Planning Development Committee in spring 2010.
