Student Finance Direct is a service for students applying for a range of Student Financial Support products for their higher education course of study. The service is a partnership between the Student Loans Company (SLC), Local Authorities (LAs), Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). It provides assistance to students and their sponsors throughout the duration of the course via the internet, telephone and the Local Authority.
The DfES writes the policy and sets the direction for Student Finance Direct, while the LAs assess the eligibility and entitlement of each student applicant. The Student Loans Company (SLC) administers the payment of money, the maintenance of customer accounts and the repayment of loans (in conjunction with the Inland Revenue) after each student customer has completed his or her studies.
SLC is also responsible for the technology behind the system, and runs the Customer Support Office (08456 077 577) where applicants can obtain basic help and information and direct more complex enquiries to the relevant Local Authority for their consideration.
