Portobello Road market
While Portobello Road market is one of the most famous markets
in the world - internationally recognised for its second-hand and
antiques sections - it has also served the local community in the
north of the borough since its beginnings in the 1880s. You can
find lots of information on local history at the
North Kensington Library in Ladbroke Grove.

Portobello Road Antiques Market
In good weather from Easter through October, many antiques
traders operate on Fridays in addition to the traditional
Saturdays. The Portobello Road Antiques Dealers Association
(PADA) is a great source of
information about antiques dealers, arcades, galleries, shops,
services, and more.
How to get there - tube and bus information
The nearest underground station is Notting Hill Gate which is on
the Central, Circle and District lines. Ladbroke Grove which is on
the Hammersmith and City Line is also fairly near to Portobello
Road. Buses 7, 12, 23, 27, 28, 31, 52, 70, 328 and 452 all stop
close to Portobello Road. Please also see our more detailed
directions to the market.
Visitors are advised to come by public transport as parking
spaces are scarce, especially on Saturdays. Coach operators should
set down and pick up at Notting Hill Gate and drivers should not
attempt to travel into Portobello Road.

Portobello Pantry taking shape Every
Friday

Keep an eye out for new high-quality fresh and prepared food stalls

- our excellent meat, fish, eggs, cheese, olives,
olive oil, fine vinegar, bread, sweet and savoury tarts
and pastries from Popina and others, and of
course our renowned fruit and vegetable stalls. Look
for authentic African sauces from Ebelleo, gluten free baked goods
from Floris Foods, and
pates and other specialist products from French traiteur Les
Saveurs du Sud!

Market Jubilee Tea Party 2 June

Watch this space for emerging details. For now, we can say there'll
be historical photographic installations throughout the markets, a
special 'then & now' exhibit by the Museum of Brands, Packaging and
Advertising, an affectionate photo-op for dog-loving Royalists,
and two charity tea stalls: one run by the Salvation Army, and another
by the Women's Institute.
Clipper Teas will be
donating tea and Hummingbird
Bakery will be donating cakes, so be sure to plan a celebratory
visit to Portobello and Golborne on this very special occasion!

Seasonal root vegetables from Portobello
Road market traders were turned into a variety of tempting winter
dishes by chef Andrea Hamilton and food entrepreneur Alan
Rosenthal, author of 'Stewed!', as part
of the 2012 Festival of British Roots. Alan and Andrea have now
posted
recipes from the demonstration cookery stall!
Shoppers were also able to taste free samples of dishes created
by private chef, cookery teacher and writer Sabrina Ghayour on
select fruit and vegetable stalls throughout the market. Especially
popular among traders and volunteers were her two
soups and divine parsnip, honey and walnut
cake! Recipes will be posted soon for Sabrina's swede and
carrot crush
and asian beetroot slaw.
Alternatively, shoppers can pick up printed copies of these and
other recipes from select fruit and vegetable stalls in Portobello
and Golborne Road markets.
Those with a sweet tooth were able to buy beetroot and chocolate
cupcakes baked by the Hummingbird
Bakery at its Portobello Road shop. This recipe is
also available for a limited time at select Portobello and Golborne
Road market fruit and vegetable stalls!
Children from local primary schools took part in a range of
veg-related activities in a gazebo on Portobello Square organised
by the Primary Care Trust. The children were introduced to the
local Kitchen Garden Project and given root vegetable seeds by the
Council. A bicycle-powered
smoothie machine was used to blend root vegetable
soups and the children played 'veg detectives' when they were asked
to guess the secret ingredient in cakes, breads, pies and
drinks.
Prior to the event, Councillor Nick Paget-Brown, Deputy Leader of
the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, said: "I hope as many
people as possible get along to Portobello Road to enjoy some of
the treats on offer at the Festival of British Roots. There are
some real treats on offer from hearty stews to delicious
cupcakes."
