Description

Upper half of sheet: study for the head of David in the painting 'David' (c.1865, private collection). The drapery over the upper body is also indicated. The beard is smaller, and the model appears to be younger, than in the finished painting. Lower half of sheet: study for the right hand of David. Part of the sleeve is also indicted.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
