Study for the right arm of Icarus in the painting 'Daedalus and Icarus' (c.1869, private collection). The fingers are less curled than in the finished painting. Upper right of sheet: full-length study of a seated male figure, facing the viewer. He is seated on the ground and is leaning to the right, resting the left elbow on a low surface. The right arm reaches across the torso.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
