Upper half of sheet: study for the head of Helios in the painting 'Helios and Rhodos' (c.1869, Tate). The edge of the left shoulder and part of the arm are also indicated. The angle of the head is not the same as in the painting, and it is raised higher. Lower half of sheet: study for the heads of Helios and Rhodos.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
