Left of sheet: full-length study for the male figure with back to the viewer and turned to the left, inspecting a sword, seen to the right of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). The figure holds the sword horizontally at head height and wears different head wear to the figure in the finished work. Centre left of sheet: full-length study for the male figure facing the viewer and inspecting a weapon, to the right of the painting. Only the head, right arm and hands are seen in the finished work. Centre right of sheet: full-length study for the male figure facing the viewer and pointing his sword down and to the left. The head wear is different to the finished painting and the step is directly under the figure. Right of sheet: full-length study for the group of two male figures inspecting a sword, one with back to viewer, and one just seen, to the right of the painting. The head wear is different to the finished work. Lower left of sheet: full-length rough study of a figure. Lower right of sheet: study for drapery, probably arranged over the left arm of a figure.
