Description

Left of sheet: full-length study for the group of two male figures with shields on their arms, to the upper left of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). The head of the figure to the right faces the viewer and looks down, whereas in the finished work he looks over the left shoulder. Centre of sheet: full-length study for the left-most male figure to the upper left of the fresco. Centre right of sheet: full-length study for the second male figure from the left, to the upper left of the fresco. The shield appears to be a different shape to that seen in the finished work. Right of sheet: half-length study for the male figure to the right of the balcony to the upper left of the fresco. The figure is turned to the left, whereas in the finished fresco he is turned to the right. Below this is a second rough study for the same figure. The pose is similar to the finished work.
