Inscribed lower right "Arts of War SK" in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "M68" encircled, in pencil.
Left of sheet: full-length study for the male figure leaning against a column and reaching to the right shoe, to the left of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Centre left of sheet: full-length study for the group of two male figures, one seated and one standing, to the extreme left of the fresco. Upper right of sheet: full-length study for the female figure sewing, seen second from the right in the group of female figures to the lower left of the fresco. Lower right of sheet: full-length rough study for the female figure seated immediately to the left of the previous figure. She holds a length of fabric between both hands, whereas in the finished work, the figure to the right appears to hold one side.
