Inscribed lower right "Arts of War SK" in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "M70" encircled, in pencil.
Upper left of sheet: full-length nude study for the male figure with back to viewer, being fitted with armour, to the left of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Both hands are held lower and the figure is turned more to the left than in the finished work. Upper centre left of sheet: full-length nude study for the male figure pointing to the right ankle, to the left of the fresco. The head and upper body are turned more towards the viewer in the finished work. Upper right of sheet: full-length study for the kneeling female figure to the left of the fresco. Lower right of sheet: full-length study for the seated female figures sewing, to the far right of the group of female figure at the left of the fresco.
