Inscriptions: Inscribed lower right "Arts of War SK" in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "245" encircled, in blue ink.

Description

Left of sheet: study for the right sleeve of the male figure pointing to his right ankle, to the left of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Part of the drapery covering the right side of the torso is also indicated. Right of sheet: study for a sleeve, possibly for the same male figure, however the left sleeve of this figure is not seen in the finished work. The wrist is also indicated.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
