Description

Study for the drapery over the left arm of the male figure leaning against a column and reaching to his right shoe, to the left of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Part of the left hand and sleeve is also indicated, although the sleeve is not seen in the finished work.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
