Interpretation
Although the drapery study on the left of this sheet does not relate to any figure in the fresco, it is probably an early idea for the project.
Left of sheet: half-length drapery study for a female figure, with right hand raised above head height. Probably for the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Right of sheet: drapery study for the right sleeve of the kneeling female figure with right hand to her chest, to the left of the same fresco.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum.
