Description

Half-length drapery study for the male figure bending forward to load a crossbow, with back to viewer, seen to the far right of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). The hands and part of the lower body are indicated.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton Hosue Museum
