Left of sheet: drapery study for the right sleeve of the male figure facing the viewer and inspecting a sword, to the right of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Part of the drapery covering the torso and part of the right hand are also indicated. Upper right of sheet: drapery study for the right sleeve of the female figure sewing, to the far left of the fresco. The right hand is roughly indicated. Lower right of sheet: full-length study for the same female figure. Unlike the finished work, the figure looks towards the viewer.
