Left of sheet: full-length study for the male figure passing through the gateway, with back to viewer, just left of centre in the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). The sword carried under the right arm is also indicated. Centre left of sheet: full-length study for the male figure turned to the right with drapery falling from the head, in the centre of the fresco. The sword carried under the right arm, and the step on which the left foot rests, are also indicated. Centre right of sheet: full-length study for the male figure, probably unfastening drapery which falls from the waist, to the right of the fresco. Right of sheet: full-length study for the male figure kneeling before a pile of swords, with back to viewer, to the lower right of the fresco. The head is seen in profile and looks down to the left towards the swords, whereas in the finished work the back of the head is seen. The swords are also indicated. Lower centre of sheet: full-length study for the male child carring a helmet, to the right of the fresco.
