Inscriptions: Inscribed lower right "Arts of War SK" in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, lower left "M18" or "M98" encircled, in pencil.

Description

Half-length drapery study for the male figure, probably unfastening drapery which falls from the waist, to the right of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). The neck, chin and hands are also indicated. The chin is held higher than in the finished work.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
