Interpretation

The ruled lines across the composition are to help with perspective and the positioning of the figures. There is also a note which reads "3 x 4 1/2" at the left of the image. This may indicate the approximate size, in feet, that Leighton intended the finished work to be. In fact it is slightly larger at 3 feet 3 1/2 inches by 5 feet 3 1/2 inches.

Description

Rough study for the composition of the painting 'Winding the Skein' (c.1878, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney). There are diagonal and horizontal ruled lines across the composition.
