Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed lower right "Phryne" in pencil, erased. Inscribed lower centre "[4 illegible words] " in pencil, erased. Inscribed on reverse, centre "H96" encircled, in pencil.
Left of sheet: full-length study for the figure of Phryne in the painting 'Phryne at Eleusis' (c.1880-82, untraced). Very similar to the finished work, although drapery covers part of the breasts and the decorative band below the chest in the painting is not included. Upper centre left of sheet: study of the same standing female figure, turned to the left, with drapery falling from the right shoulder. The figure looks down towards her hands which are held together at chest height. Lower centre left of sheet: full-length study of the same standing female figure, facing the viewer, with drapery falling from the right shoulder. The figure looks down towards the ground. The hands are held tegether under the chin. Centre right of sheet: full-length study of the same standing female figure, facing the viewer, with drapery falling from the right shoulder. The figure looks down towards the ground. The right hand is against the right side of the face and the left hand hangs by her side and holds a pitcher. Right of sheet: full-length study for the female child in the painting 'Moorish Garden: A Dream of Granada' (c.1874, Teacher's College, Armidale, Australia). The pitcher she carries is also indicated.
