Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, embossed. Inscribed lower centre "Decoration" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, centre "128" in pencil, encircled, crossed out in blue biro. Inscribed on reverse, centre "F45" encircled, in pencil.
Interpretation
The chair is a klismos chair, a design from ancient Greece.
Upper half of sheet: full-length study for the seated female figure to the far right of the painting 'Music' (c.1883-85, Leighton House Museum). The chair, footstool and the animal skin which falls from the chair are also indicated. Lower half of sheet: full-length study for the recling male figure to the right of the painting.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
