Inscriptions: Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "D28" encircled, in pencil.

Interpretation

This drawings was purchased, shortly after Leighton's death, by Mrs. James Watney, who had a number of studies for the paintings 'Cymon and Iphigenia' (c.1884, private collection) and 'The Daphnephoria' (1874-76, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight). She was said to have modelled for the woman in Leighton's painting 'Clytemnestra' (c.1874, Leighton House Museum) and was also the owner of his best known work entitled 'Flaming June' (c.1895, Museo de Arte Ponce, Puerto Rico).

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896 (Fine Art Society reference number D28); purchased from the Fine Art Society by Mrs. James Watney of 28 De Vere Gardens, Kensington, London, for ú23:2:0; presented to Leighton House Museum by Watney in c.1897
