Inscriptions: Inscribed lower right "Cymon and Iphigenia" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, centre "D61" encircled, in pencil.

Interpretation

Although these figures are similar to the reclining female figures in the painting 'Cymon and Iphigenia' (c.1884, private collection), this is probably a later drawing and may be related to the painting 'The Garden of Hesperides' (c.1892, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight).

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
