Description

Left of sheet: nude study for the figure of a Terpischore in the right hand panel of the painting 'The Marquand Ceiling' (c.1886, private collections). The figure is placed within a frame and the tambourine and drapery are lightly marked in. Right of sheet: composition of the left hand panel of the painting 'The Marquand Ceiling' (c.1886, private collections). Rough drawing with the decoration in the painted frame of the finished work roughly indicated.

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
