Interpretation

The drawing may be an early study for the second figure from the left, in the group by the well, to the right of the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). A pencil copy of this this figure is in an album formerly belonging to Alexandra, Princess of Wales, in the Royal Library, Windsor (reference number 32442).

Description

Full-length standing female figure, facing the viewer. The figure's weight rests on the left hand which leans on a low wall. The right hand hangs by her side and holds a pitcher. The head is turned slightly to the left. The figure is in classical dress. This is possibly an early study for the figure dressed in orange and holding a pitcher, to the right of the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery).
