Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed lower right "Andromache" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, centre "C38" encircled, in pencil.
Left of sheet: full-length study for the figure of Andromache and the pitcher at her feet, in the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). The drawing differs from the finished work as part of the figure's drapery rises into the air in front of her. Also no handle can be seen on the pitcher. Centre right of sheet: full-length study for the figure facing the viewer, in blue, to the left of the painting. The pose is similar to the finished work although the pitcher shown on her head is smaller and of a different type. Upper right of sheet: full-length study for the figure with back to the viewer, in blue, to the left of the painting. The drawing differs from the finished work as the hands are held lower on the head and the classical dress is a different style. Lower right of sheet: full-length study for the same figure, viewed from a different angle. In this drawing the figure faces to the left with the head turned to face the viewer.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
