Interpretation
The study to the lower left of this sheet may have been later developed into the painting 'Fatidica' (c.1894, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight).
Left of sheet: full-length study for the female figure, seen with a baby to the right of the painting 'Captive Andromache' (1888, City Art Gallery, Manchester). Upper centre of sheet: half-length study for the male figure, seen with a female figure and baby, to the right of the painting. The female figure and baby are also lightly sketched in. Right of sheet: half-length study for the male figure, seen with a female figure and baby, to the right of the painting. Upper right of sheet: two small sketches for parts of the baby seen to the right of the painting. Lower left of sheet: full-length study of a seated female figure, facing to the left, with the lower body turned to the right. The right arm rests on the arm of a chair. The left elbow rests on the arm of a chair and the hand is raised to the forehead.
