Inscriptions: Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed centre "Andromache" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, centre "9" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, upper right "C76" encircled, in pencil.

Description

Three-quarter length drapery study for the male figure, wearing a red hat, to the lower left of the painting 'Captive Andromache' (c.1888, Manchester Art Gallery). The head and arms, and the stick and bundle he holds, are also lightly indicated. The model is clean shaven, whereas in the finished painting he has a thick beard and moustache. 

Provenance

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum.
